Application for New Music Incubator Latvia

New Music Incubator Latvia is a project that brings together professional new music practitioners (musicians, composers, freeform artists, electronica artist, sound artists, etc) from the Nordic and Baltic countries, for a period of collaborative creative research. The participants will be artists who collectively employ a range of approaches to music and sound production including improvisation, composition and sound art. Through this meeting, the project hopes to promote mutual professional development, skill sharing and the development of networks for future projects.

New Music Incubator Latvia is organised in 2 phases:

Phase 1:  8-13 June 2010: 25 Nordic and Baltic new music practitioners meet at Jurnieka Ligzda, a beach hotel in Liepaja, Latvia, 200 km southwest of Riga. The aim with the project is to create new works each day, through a close collaboration between performers, composers, improvisers and sound artists, enabling a creative re-evaluation of these roles and definitions.

Phase 2: 19-21 November 2010: The participants meet again some months later in Riga, to re-develop and rehearse some of the works for public performance. This phase may result in live recordings of the work and will complete a creative cycle for the participants.

The project will be managed and curated by musician Patrik Karlsson and composers Martin Q Larsson and Charles Griffin.

If you would like to apply, please send an email to Martin Q Larsson at lager@martinq.com outlining why you feel this would be a useful project for you to undertake. We would be grateful if you could do this as soon as possible, and certainly no later that the 15th March 2010. You should include:

  • Why this would be an appropriate time for you to undertake this work
  • What you would hope to gain from the project
  • What you feel you could contribute to the project
  • A brief general statement about your work.

Please also attach a copy of your current CV with web links if appropriate.

The final selection of participants will be based both upon consideration of an artists motivation and artistic abilities, but also on creating a workable group dynamic, with a mix of instrumentation and a variety of artistic approaches. We will include participants from all Nordic and Baltic Countries if possible, i.e: Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark, Iceland, Greenland, Faroe Islands, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia.
There will be a minor registration fee for the selected participants – 100€ for Nordic, 50€ for Baltic – which includes course, food and lodging for the week, but not travels. (Easiest is to fly to Riga and take a train or bus to Liepaja, several companies including RyanAir lands in Riga. There are also several ferries to Riga or Klaipeda.)
